What is Passport Renewal?

A Passport is an important document issued by the government to allow you to travel internationally, verify your identity, and serve as proof of your citizenship. In India, this document comes with a validity period of 10 years and should be renewed on time for uninterrupted travel. Passport renewal is the procedure of updating a passport that has expired or is about to expire. The process includes submitting an application, providing valid identification documents, and paying the required fee.

Types of Indian Passports issued in India and their Validity

The passports issued in India are valid for a period of 10 years and their types are as given below: 

  • Ordinary Passport (Dark Blue Cover): This is for regular international travel like tourism, business, education, etc. This passport is valid for a period of 10 years for adults and five years for minors 
  • Official Passport (White Cover): This type of passport is for government officials or personnel representing India on official assignments and is valid as per the duration of the official assignment.
  •  Diplomatic Passport (Maroon Cover): This passport is issued to diplomats, top-ranking officials, and their dependents on diplomatic duties and is usually valid for a period of 5 years or as specified by the government
  • Emergency Certificate / Temporary Passport: This passport is issued in case urgent travel when passport is lost, stolen, or expired. It is valid for a single or limited journey as specified. 

Registering Online for the Passport Renewal Process

The first step in applying for passport renewal online is to have an account on the official Passport Seva website. You can create a passport account by following the steps given below:

Step 1: You have to first register for passport renewal on the Passport Seva website.

Step 2 : If already registered on the website, you can login using the link 'Existing User Login'.

Step 3 : 
If you are not an existing user, you will have to create an account by clicking on 'New User Register'.

Step 4 : 
A new page will appear where you will have to select the city where you reside under the ‘Passport Office’ option. For example, if you reside in Bangalore, then under the ‘Passport Office’ option choose. Bangalore. Proceed to provide other details such as your name, date of birth, login ID, password, etc. Enter the characters displayed and click on ‘Register’.

Step 5 : 
Provide the basic details that include name, date of birth etc. and create a login ID and password.

Step 6 : You will receive an email with an activation link.

Step 7 : Activate the account using the link in the email.

Step 8 : Once you have signed into the passport account, go to the 'Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport' tab.

Once you have registered on the Passport Seva Online Portal, you can start your passport renewal application online. Follow the steps given below: 

Step 1: Go to the official Passport Seva website: Passport Seva 

Step 2: Click “Existing User? Login”. 

Step 3: Select “Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport”. 

Step 4: Fill in all required details, including your personal information and the passport you want to renew. 

Step 5: Double-check all the information before submitting, as mistakes may require starting the application over. 

Step 6: Click “View Saved/Submitted Application” to schedule your appointment. 

Step 7: Complete the online payment, which is mandatory for booking appointments at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or passport office. You can complete the payment via internet banking, debit, or credit card. In case you don’t have online payment options, you can print an offline challan and pay at an SBI branch (payment verification may take up to 2 days). 

Step 8: After completing the application, click “Print Application Receipt”. This receipt contains all your details and reference number. If you don’t have a printer, showing the SMS confirmation is sufficient. 

Step 9: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra or passport office on the scheduled date and time. Missing the appointment means you will need to re-book and start over. 

The Passport Renewal Fee

The fee for renewing (reissuing) a passport in India depends on the number of pages in the booklet and whether you opt for the normal or Tatkaal service:

36-page passport (adults): Rs.1,500

60-page passport (adults): Rs.2,000

36-page passport (minors below 18 years): Rs.1,000

If you choose Tatkaal service, an additional fee of Rs.2,000 is charged over and above the normal application fee.

How to Book a Passport Renewal Appointment

The steps to schedule an appointment to renew your passport are mentioned below:

Step 1 : Visit the official website of Passport Seva.

Step 2 : Log into your account.

Step 3 : Click on 'Pay and Schedule Appointment link' from the 'View Saved and Submitted Application' menu.

Step 4 : After booking the appointment, pay the required fee. The payment options available are credit cards, debit cards, SBI challan, and net banking.

Step 5 : Click on 'Print Application Receipt.' The application reference number/appointment number is included on this receipt.

The steps to track the status of your passport renewal are mentioned below: 

Step 1: Visit the official website of Passport Seva. 

Step 2: On the homepage, navigate to ‘Track Application Status.’   

Step 3: Choose the application type as Passport/PCC/IC/GEP.  

Step 4: Enter the file number of your passport and your date of birth.  

Step 5: Click on the ‘Track Status’ option. The status of your passport renewal will be displayed on the screen.

Documents Required for Passport Renewal

A person must submit additional paperwork together with the application form when applying to renew their passport. The Passport Seva Kendra website has a "Document Advisor" for passport renewal. Depending on the kind of passport being renewed (regular/tatkaal) and the applicant's age (child/adult), different documentation is required.
The general documents for most applications are as follows:

  1. Original old Passport
  2. Self-attested copies of the first two and last two pages of the passport.
  3. Self-attested copy of the Emigration Check Required (ECR)/Non-ECR page.
  4. Self-attested copy of the page of observation, if any, made by the Passport Issuing Authority.
  5. Self-attested copy of the validity extension page, if any, with respect to the Short Validity Passport (SVP)
  6. Proof of documents which eliminate the cause of issuance of Short Validity Passport (SVP).

Difference Between Renewal and Reissue of Passports

While renewal of the passport is carried out in the event that the validity of the existing passport expired, a passport is reissued in the event of the following :

  2. Lost passport
  3. Stolen Passport

  5. Damaged or soiled passports
  6. Change in personal details

Renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP)

The passport renewal process is quite simple for SVP. All the individual needs to do is visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and file an application for the purpose of renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP).

Short Validity Passports (SVP) are issued in cases such as the ones which are mentioned below:

  1. Students appearing for exams like Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL),etc.
  2. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who wish to travel to India for short periods
